Apathy Journals Archive

The Beginning

In early 2008 I started making short comics (like the ones you get if you click "first" in the menu above) as well as longer comics (like the ones under "long adventures" in the sidebar to the left). I drew these in a white-dudes-on-grey-background-style inspired by John Campbell.

"Short Adventures"

The generic-looking-guy in the short adventures often represents me, and when I started out the black-haired-guy could represent anyone around me. HOWEVER: After doing Hourly Comics in July 2008 I had built up an extensive cast of avatars representing most people I know, so NOW if I want to illustrate a conversation between me and, for instance, my friend Emil, I have a little dude that specifically represents HIM. The black-haired-dude still appears quite often though, usually if I want a comic foil that doesn't represent any real person in particular.

"Long Adventures"

It may not seem like it, but all these "long adventures" are part of an ongoing story. They are not listed in any real order, to add to the temporal confusion of the reader and the protagonist. The protagonist is a nameless character on an inter-universal trip, stumbleing between surreal adventures, mostly in an attempt to get home. Eventually he realizes that there are Greater Powers At Work, and that he is being watched. Do not worry if you do not understand any of it - the general shape of the overarching story should (hopefully) emerge as I add more comics. It is this storyline that I originally called "Apathy Adventures", while the "short adventures" started out as a nameless journal comic.

The Part Where It Gets Confusing

The protagonist of the Apathy Adventures storyline ("Long Adventures") at one point becomes aware of the existence of someone called "Jakob Burrows" who apparently manipulates his journey through the worlds. I realize that this can be very confusing considering that the protagonist of the "Long Adventures" LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME as the dude representing me, Jakob Burrows, in many comics in the comic stream, and all the Hourly Comics. To add to the confusion there are also a lot of bystanders in both comics that look exactly the same as BOTH of them.

Anyway.

You can read these comics in any order you like. They still won't make any sense until you've read a lot of them.
